As I’m sure you know, since March we’ve had a new defibrillator in the old BT phone box, installed by the Community Heartbeat Trust (CHT) with funding from the District Council, County Council, Village Voices, local farmers and businesses and others. In normal times CHT would now be offering a face to face training seminar in the village hall to demonstrate how to use the defibrillator and show how it works. However that’s clearly not possible this year, so instead they have kindly offered to run a training session for the village next January via Zoom to get us up to speed.
In the meantime their National Secretary Martin Fagan has put together a short 24 minute YouTube video which does what it says on the tin - the link is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ33U2GfEB0&t=1s and it’s called A How To Guide to Community Defibrillators. In it Martin covers the basic awareness topics:
- Legal issues (am I liable as a first responder?)
- Defibrillators: what do they do?
- Chest compression and rescue (CPR)
- Defibrillators: some hands-on demos.
It’s a clear non-technical introduction to what’s involved, and it’s well worth a look in advance to help understand a bit about the background and also to get an idea about the device itself.
The CHT training session will be held via Zoom on 19th January at 7.00 p.m. and will be specifically tailored for us and the defibrillator we’ve got installed (it’s a Lifeline View which is completely automatic and doesn’t require any skill or special knowledge to operate). It will be hosted by Martin who will be giving full details on how to operate the device, and it will also include a question and answer session to cover any additional information you might require.
